Dispatches From The Marriage Factory: Dudes and Dudes

Some dudes marry other dudes. Get over it.

So read the T-shirt of one witness for a same-sex male couple.  Indeed
they do, in California and a growing list of other states and
countries.  Some chicks marry other chicks, too.  And I help them get
it done.  This week's couples included a double wedding, two pairs of
women who'd been together almost 35 years and had all known each other
even longer.

When I told my mother I wanted to start doing weddings to help
same-sex couples get the same rights I had, she told me that I had
confirmed what a good mother she was (just like Miss Janet!).  After
all, if I cared so much about justice, she must have instilled that in
me.  She was right.

You can imagine how devastated she was when Proposition 8 passed in
2008.  One of the main reasons for my enrollment at the Hall was gone,
as was the image of the progressive nature of California.  She
monitored the frustratingly slow pace of the challenges to both Prop 8
and DOMA.  She called me in jubilant voice when the Supreme Court
issued its rulings overturning both, so happy about something that
didn't directly affect her.  That's my mom.

Some dudes marry other dudes.  I make sure that happens.  'Cause my
mama raised me right.

YES! PROP 8 AND DOMA GONE

The Supreme Court struck down DOMA and said the ruling that Prop.8 is unconstitutional stands.  Equality takes another step forward.

I am so happy over these rulings.  My gay friends and family have gained rights that all human beings should have.  I can't begin to understand the level of happiness they are feeling.   It is the joy of being equal, the happiness to walk in and buy a marriage license where you live.  No more marrying in another state as a statement of love and commitment then come home and the ceremony is not recognized.  

In about 25 days I can again do marriage ceremonies for ANYONE.  Happy Dance everyone!

Prop 8, gone!

Today the judge ruled that Prop 8 is unconstitutional!  I am thrilled, I am happy.  I am also waiting for the next trial.  The supporters of Prop 8 have already filed an appeal.  That was expected.  We are sure this issue will go to the US Supreme Court. 

The Supreme Court is a good thing. When this goes to the US Supreme Court it will make the decision a federal ruling for all 50 states.  And we feel that will be a ruling that same sex couples may marry. 

We also are waiting for the judge to rule whether CA can sell licenses for same sex couples to marry.  A hearing will be held on August 6.  Then we will wait for a decision.

Keep your fingers crossed.  Please God, may we get to again do same sex marriages.
