FREEDOM DAY USA

The United States Military is important to me.  My husband was in the Kentucky Air National Guard, my Papa Jack was in the Air Force, my brother was career Air Force, and Nephew Tres is career Air Force.  Lots of friends and family served in the military.  They and millions others have kept our country safe.  Below is a way to thank our military with a day of free services.  The website is for the whole country.  The press release below the link is from my dentist, Dr. Patil and is for the San Francisco Bay Area.  More businesses are needed around the country and more of our military active and retired need to know about this event.  Please share this, talk it up, and if you have a business, participate.  Put this on Facebook, email the link to friends, spread the word.

Check out Freedom Day USA information here.

Giving Our Military A DAY OF FREE
Thursday, September 12, 2013

Dr. Julita Patil D.D.S. in Concord THANKS MILITARY WITH FREE DENTAL CLEANINGS.

What would it be like to miss your child’s first birthday, their first steps or their high school graduation? What if you could not talk with your spouse or family for weeks at a time? What if you didn’t know if a family member was safe? For most of us these situations are rare, however, for those in our military and their family members they are part of their daily life.

“Our men and women of our Armed Forces make great personal sacrifices in order to secure and protect our freedoms,” said Dr. Robert Martino, founder of the Freedom Day USA event. “Their families have endured hardships and some have given all they have so that we may live in peace-free to pursue our dreams. Let’s join together to say “Thank You” for their sacrifices and for our freedom, by giving them a Day of Free!”

On September 12, 2013 businesses across the United States will join in Freedom Day USA, a national Thank You Movement for the members of our military and their immediate families, along with Veterans. Each business participant is providing a thank you gift, in the form of free services, goods, discounts, and various other offers. Locally, Dr. Julita Patil and team are presenting free dental cleanings, exams, and xrays  to those who serve our country. A complete list of local participating businesses and the services they are providing can be found on www.FreedomDayUSA.org

To learn more about this National Thank You Movement or to sign your business up as a participant for future events, you can visit www.FreedomDayUSA.org  or the event’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/FreedomDayUSA.  The services provided to our country by these ladies and gentlemen are very much appreciated.

Memorial Day

I looked up Memorial Day (MD) on Google.  I wanted to see when it started, why, and how it ended up as a national cookout day.  Well as they say, you can't believe everything you read on the internet.

MD was started by President Grant to bring the country together after the Civil War.  MD was a day to honor both sides.  MD was a day started by freed slaves and or black freeman  in the deep South to honor fallen Union soldiers.  MD was a day to commemorate the opening of a military cemetery.  Memorial Day was started . . .      The general consensus is Memorial Day is a day to honor our military who have given their lives for our nation.  Google it yourself and see what you can learn.

We all know of someone who died in a war.  From WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm to today in Iraq and Afghanistan, we have all been touched, hurt, devastated by a military death. And then there are all the battles that don't get called wars.  The battles we send in our young military people to handle.  Memorial Day is the time to honor the ones we lost.

But how did MD become a cookout holiday and a vacation starter?  Google wasn't much help with that question.  So I will propose some theories and you may discuss.

Americans are getting a day off work, that always calls for a party.
School is out or close to out.  Families factor in the paid holiday and take off on a trip.
Stores put on promotions for "cookout" foods and related items. You know hamburger, beer, cars, towels. We all jump on the bandwagon.
June is in a few days, that means summer fun.  What is more fun than a cookout?
Cookouts are more fun that a memorial service in a church or cemetery.
Big Business jumps on every holiday and destroys the true meaning.
Getting together is a way to remember our military.  Americans always use food as a reason to gather.

None or all of these may be why Memorial Day is now a cookout day and the beginning to summer trips .  The reason we gather doesn't matter, as long as we remember our military heroes.

YOU ARE SOOOO BEAUTIFUL

On this day:1937 Merle Haggard, American musician, was born

OK, I won't do any more. But I will be back with more. Love that app, On this Day. . .
The edit process is not working today. I keep putting in paragraph breaks, Blogger keeps leaving them out. Sorry about that.
Weddings. I did a few on Monday. The weather was so awful I didn't think anyone would show up. But around 3:00 the sun came out and so did the people.
The first wedding the bride had been married before and had her two children with her. Her 7 year old son was the official witness. That meant he had to sign the license in a tiny space. Adults get this wrong and sign all over the page. I explained to the little boy where to sign and how tiny he had to write. He could only print, he hadn't learned cursive yet. He painstakingly printed his full name, and it was in the tiny space. His little sister, 5 years old, asked her mother if they were married now. "Yes," her mother said. And the little girl became ecstatic and grabbed her stepfather and hugged him. She then told me that on Friday she had told her teacher that her stepdaddy and mother were getting married. "And now I can tell her they are married!" These children were thrilled with this man as their stepfather. This was a very special type of love in the room.
The next wedding was very special. The bride was in a lovely white chiffony dress and ready for the ceremony. But we had to wait on the groom. He was changing into his Naval uniform. He didn't want it to wrinkle, so he waited until we were ready, to change clothes. They had lots of family and friends with them. Everyone was dressed up and looking lovely. After the wedding I thanked the young man for serving in the military. He then told me his bride was also in the military. She is in the Reserves. A very special wedding.
We will skip the third and go on to the fourth wedding of the day. The couple were in their late 20's. When I met them the groom told me he was so happy to have such a beautiful woman marrying them. He kept talking about how beautiful I am. (Folks, I am well preserved, but beautiful? No one has ever accused me of that.) I just smiled and herded them into the elevator. Then he gave me one of the best left handed compliments ever said. To his bride he said, "When you get old like her, I want you to be just as beautiful." This is right up there with "For a fat girl you don't sweat much."
Men, never ever use old and beautiful in the same sentence.
Now there was something wrong with the groom, nothing that caused me to think of not doing the wedding. But was he close to drunk? Was he high on something? Was he mentally impaired? I don't know. He did not smell of alcohol, he didn't slur his words, his eyes were not dilated. But he kept listing to the side, his eyes kept closing, he was wobbly. Something going on there.
Who knows.
They are in love, they are married, and I am soooo beautiful.
